Yellow Earth (Huáng tǔdì) is a 1984 Chinese drama film. It was also the directorial debut of Chen Kaige. The film focuses on the helplessness of the people living amongst the feudal society. Yellow Earth is a pioneering work made among other Chinese films during the same period, which marked the rise of a new generation of filmmakers, known as China’s “Fifth Generation”. The film’s artistic cinematography has been done by Zhang Yimou. Rich in Philosophy and Symbolism, the film will be considered a masterpiece in world cinema.
The screening will be followed by an interaction session with Prof Gayatri Chatterjee, Film Teacher and Writer.
