SPIC MACAY Cinema Classics presents Devi (1960) by Satyajit Ray
[Bengali (English subtitles)] runtime: 93 min
Devi is a 1960 Bengali drama film by director Satyajit Ray, starring Sharmila Tagore and Soumitra Chatterjee. It is based on a short story by Provatkumar Mukhopadhyay. The title Devi means "Goddess".
The haunting Devi, set in nineteenth century Bengal and at the intersection of blind faith and rationality, was Tagore's first lead role. Umaprasad tries to save his wife Doyamoyee as his father believes that Doyamoyee is the reincarnation of goddess Durga and worships her but fails to bring her back as tragedy strikes.
The story is a fine attack on religious dogmatism in a patriarchal society.
