[Bengali (English subtitles)]
(Duration: 120 min)
Satyajit Ray's Bengali-language drama film Agantuk (lit. 'Guest') was written and directed in 1991. Notable for being Ray's last film, it was based on one of his own short stories, Atithi. The central conflict of the film rests upon the identity of the man and the family's struggle to determine it. The film was a collaborative Indo-French production.
The film received positive reviews at its initial release. In 1992, the picture came in second on Cahiers du Cinéma's Top 10 Films of the Year list. Agantuk won Best Feature Film and Best Directing at the 1992 Indian National Film Awards, and Mamata Shankar received the Special Jury Award for her depiction of Anila.
The screening will be followed by an interaction session with Mr. Spandan Bhattacharya, Film Faculty, BITS Pilani.
